Philosophy of Design

“To develop a complete mind: study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.”

Leonardo Da Vinci

As a teacher of visual design/rhetoric at Wayne State University and former graphic designer, trained in oil painting and digital/web design with a professional background in project management for virtual/interactive communication and software design, I apply graphic and web design principles of layout & composition, color theory, typography, and hypertext to university course and graphic designs to engage students and readers of my written/visual work. This is crucial in online writing instruction when personal interactions are limited to screen and print. I apply proven methods of digital asset management, revision control, and process automation to manage complex, long- and short-term projects through file/folder hierarchy and naming conventions and strong leadership skills, keeping programs on schedule at high performance rates.

Explore my digital teaching portfolio’s artifacts, which illustrate how my design philosophy empowers students and inspires readers to take positive action. Such artifacts include a step-by-step design process instruction set and infographic, a short assignment, and visually engaging and color-coded course schedules.
